Mya
by Katie

Mya is a beautiful, kind, sweet, loving girl. Mya is a very special girl; she would do anything just to make sure that your feelings don't get hurt!  All you have to do is meet Mya once, you'll love her!

Having Vitiligo has been hard on Mya; she gets dirty looks, stares, and people pointing and laughing at her all the time. I see how they look at my beautiful daughter and it makes me so angry that people in this world are so ignorant. Every look and stare seems to destroy her self-esteem; it's getting harder and harder to rebuild her confidence and self-esteem.

Mya tells me she wishes every day that she didn't have this stupid Vitiligo; she wishes that she was normal looking! I tell her every day that she is very beautiful and unique and who wants to be ordinary? Being a mother you just want to keep your child from getting hurt or being made fun of. It kills me as a parent that there is nothing I can do to make people STOP staring, pointing, and making stupid comments!

When we got the AVRF calendar, Mya took it to school to show everyone. All of her classmates thought she was so cool because she was in a calendar.  Once the kids saw there were other kids that have Vitiligo, the kids ask her questions instead of just making fun of her.

Tyann, Mya's 7-year old sister, tells Mya she is lucky to have “spots”! Tyann said she would love to have “spots” so she could be in a calendar and meet everyone from AVRF. Every day Tyann looks to see if she is getting “spots,” too.

We tell Mya every day she is pretty, and very special to everyone that loves her!
